The Moves // v. 2 - “The Art of Song vs. The Co-Write”
Today’s standards of record making in the music industry have spurred about from numerous reasons. We live in a time where the posterboy/postergirl rule the world of mainstream, where the listener may or may not have a care in the world where the songs/ideas originated from. I’ve come across those die hard, elitist music lovers who live to fight against dishonesty in music. I’ve also come across those wall street marketers who have not a clue of the many sub-cultures of Music. I’m intrigued.
I know this matter varies depending on the type of genre/song we’re speaking of… But humor me:
A. How would it make you feel if that very personal, tear-jerking, genuine song that your favorite artist sings was written by someone else.
B. Is the music that is co-written any less passionate and legitimate than the music that is completely DIY?

If I found out my favorite song was not written by my favorite band I would probably cry and feel very disappointed. If the artist does not have some involvement in writing the song, then it’s not theirs. I’ve seen lots of songs having an asterisk next to them saying “Written by Pete Wentz” or some crap like that and it’s like…. really? You can’t even write your own song? As if someone came up to them and said “Hey! Sing this!” and handed them some lyrics. That song doesn’t belong to the band in that case. It belongs to the writer, and I think that really destroys the essence behind a band. To co-write is one thing. Cause let’s face it, sometimes it’s nice to have help when facing writers block. And sometimes it’s fun to write something with someone else. Even though I’m not an artist I still co-wrote something with a good friend of mine while we were experiencing the same thing, and I felt as if it really helped us bond over it and we got across the message we wanted to send. We had the same inspiration and idea, and came out beautifully on paper. So co-writing isn’t a bad thing. As long as it’s not one-sided towards the one not in the band. Having someone else completely write a song for a band and having them performing it without any input from the band is pathetic. That’s not music. That’s called a cover. And if you’re not willing to write your own music then get off my stage.

A. I’d be disappointed b/c it didnt come from the artist i love, so it sort of disconnects me- genuine emotion pulls you in.
B. co-written music isnt less legit, i think it can show how two+ ppl can relate & share it with others who feel the same.

I think that music is a story, and those songs without a real story/meaning behind it would take away the thoughts and feelings I had toward it. Plus if it was written by someone else I would be disappointed..I feel like the song is not as real.

It all depends on intentions really. If a person is a legitimately good singer and wants to send a message to the world but doesn’t know how to convey ideas through words then why can’t they get help from someone who does?

I don’t like co-written music as much. I enjoy it more when it comes from the members of the band. It means more.
